Food For Thought

Blood, Sweat and Luxuries

So, has anyone watched this programme on BBC4 last night? It is amazingly thought provoking and emotionally depressing to see the horrendous conditions that the majority of Africa's children live in.
The cast are young girls and boys who are in their late teens and early twenties and I found it very interesting to see and observe their different reactions, opinions and attitudes to all the different aspects of life that these locals face every day.
I from now on will think twice about what I buy and where I buy it from. I might even consider buying fair-trade products once I find out where to buy them from. But is that the right thing to do? I mean if only a few of us change to fair-trade products it will hardly change the profits they make but imagine if a significant amount of people stopped buying these shoes? Will that not put these poor people out of business? A lose-lose situation!
Isn’t it extremely unfair that a pair of trainers that will cost us over here £60 - £150 only sell for £8 in Ethiopia?
They make so little profit on their produce it is ridiculously unfair and when they try to get more money out of the companies they threaten them with changing over to a supplier in China who are apparently even cheaper.
Well, it is certainly something to think about. We should all be more aware.
